Coastal Creations - A short History

Growing up on the coast of Maine, I always loved spending summer days at the beach. While others were swimming in the frigid water, I was always looking in tidal pools and seeing what treasures I could find in the sand. As an adult, I learned how to scuba dive which opened up another new world to explore. No matter where I travel, beachcombing is always on the agenda. Sanibel Island in Florida is a favorite spot of mine where I never tire of doing the “Sanibel Stoop”. Marine life has always been my passion, and the ocean continues to bring a calming effect in otherwise hectic times. Today I love to spend time on the family boat in Casco Bay with my husband and son looking for whales and other marine creatures that frequent the coast of Maine.

Making the Mirrors

Every item is handmade, making each uniquely beautiful. The larger mirrors are reinforced to handle the added weight of the shells. Special commercial glue is used that can withstand humidity and temperature fluctuations. I strive to showcase each shell by arranging them to accentuate their natural curves and angles. It may take several days or even weeks to make each mirror. A goal of mine is to fill each space so that very little of the underlying frame can be seen. This is what leads to the fascinating level of detail in each creation.
